FISSURE



What is Fissure?



A split in the skin that can occur between toes, especially the fourth and fifth toes. This can be caused by prolonged sweating or reduced moisture content of the skin.

Causes of Fissure:



Passing large or hard stools, straining during childbirth or experiencing bouts of diarrhea are the most observed causes of Fissure. Besides these there are some other common causes are:



Crohn's disease or another inflammatory bowel disease

  • Decreased blood flow to the anorectal area
  • Overly tight or spastic anal sphincter muscles
  • Anal cancer
  • HIV
  • Tuberculosis
  • Syphillis
  • Herpes

Signs and Symptoms of Fissure:



An anal fissure may cause one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Visible tear in the skin around the anus
  • Skin tag, or small lump of skin, next to the tear
  • Sharp pain in the anal area during bowel movements
  • Streaks of blood on stools or on tissue paper after wiping
  • Burning or itching in the anal area
